It’s November 11th. Do you know why that matters?
I’ve been in attendance for hundreds of speeches and parades honoring the nation’s military where a speaker will make the noble plea that we should really “make every day” Memorial Day, or Veterans Day, and while that’s certainly sound reasoning, there is something particularly special about November 11th .
Veteran’s Day was selected because of the incredible historical significance. Here, history reads like legend as we observe that it was on the 11th hour of the 11th day that hostilities came to a formal end in the first great, global war. We should all be aware of what the world went through over the course of four long years and the forty million lives that were lost as a result. Now if we focus on that key idea of hostilities coming to an end, we really have the essential ingredient in forming a true holiday season.
The holiday season, and the spread of holiday cheer should start by celebrating the spirit and sacrifice of our veterans. We can then use it as a barometer year to year to track our progress and see if promises have been kept to those who have done so much for their fellow citizens. Wouldn’t it be refreshing and ideal to say, “Another year will not go by without a dramatic improvement in health benefits for our veterans?” It would be a great thing to know that those who are deployed overseas to serve in harm’s way are coming home where they will be cared for and honored as they deserve.
This idea need not live in the realm of pipe dreams. It’s a completely feasible objective, and more importantly it’s the right thing to do. We have the ability to redress the sins of our collective past and provide an example to future generations as to how we honor our Veterans at the start of the holiday season and throughout the calendar year.
So to all of you reading this who have served, thank you so very much for everything you have done for your country, and your fellow citizens. Our wish is that you live a happy life in a most grateful nation.
